Butterfly 2012 17 to 18 March 2012
BUTTERFLY is a Wide Game - Patrols move from a Base to 7 others, and display Initiative along with their Training from you in the Troop situation. You are not to send Patrols to the event, unless a Leader from the Troop is on site. You do not attend, unless Patrols from your troop are participating Troop Scouters are needed to staff the bases, which Patrols endeavour to attend by way of their Map Reading skills
It is important that you arrange the troop transport so that you are on site to assist in your duties on the Base as determined by the Base Leader. This may well mean the Patrol being idle for 2 hours prior to the Start time of . Wherever the Patrol is just prior to Sundown, they must remain and set up camp. They do not camp alone between Bases
Their equipment is carried at all times The more they carry the more miserable is the walking Supervision required by you at the planning time If they complete the Course they will have walked 3,5 Kms The event closes with a Parade at 11.30 AM Sunday
Transporting parents will be advised of the location when your troops Application Form is acknowledged. At this point you will also be advised the location of Activity.
Patrol Leaders A few points you need to know about next BUTTERFLY
You are privileged to have been appointed a PATROL LEADER With this comes a lot of Responsibility as your Patrol depends on you to do well on this occasion
Firstly YOU must LEAD – this requires you to THINK and PLAN
Do we need to take a normal tent, as it is only for one night and it has to be carried ? What are we going to eat Do we need to make a fire as a consequence ? After all it is only for one Evening meal and one Breakfast. Will we share all this – a bit in every kids pack
How small can we make the Pack – after all, the heavier it is, the more annoying it is
This year you are allowed to carry a MOBILE PHONE - one per Patrol, but you must be verycareful how many times you use it, and it to be used only as an Emergency contact to your Scout Leader who will be at one of the Bases
But you must not use it to ring another Patrol, as the Information of your next Base is in code for you only and even if you did, you would be heavily penalised because the system has been designed to stop you doing this.
As the “ Theme “ is ENDANGERED ANIMALS \you have to be prepared to seek them out across the Course and become involved at each of the eight Bases concerning them This could involve you climbing trees, using ropes, and being very observant where poachers are concerned
The weather should be OK but you must still wear a suitable hat and footwear Uniform not required
Because we are in the bush there could be some small accidents – so you need to brush up on First Aid They may also be snakes, What would you do if you saw one ?
Although You will coordinate Patrol Planning you must involve the Scout Leader for their advice
It doesn’t matter if you don’t win, but you sure will learn a lot and that is far more important
When you have considered all this, you must make absolutely sure that the APPLICATION FORMHas been properly completed and sent in by the closing date Monday 27 February as this year

Beenleigh Scout Troops Hike Venman Bushland National Park to Daisy Hill Conservation Park.
WOW what a Day!!!!!. Hathi may need some time to recover. Not sure about Redback.
The scouts were dropped off by their parents at Venman Bushland Bushland Park at 8:00 am. After ensuring that we had everyone for the hike then it was down to the pointy end of the hike. Deciding which way to hike. Each patrol leader was shown a map with three planned courses that the troop could take. They then took this information back to their patrol to get consenses on which tack they wanted to take. The four Patrol leaders then reported back on their decision. They had all managed all to choose the same course which was the longest, but had about quarter of the hike outside the national and conservation park. Of the two hikes remaining the four patrol leaders managed to agree to pick another course which was the one that was planned. this was the shorter of the three but as it turned out was the most hilly of the three. The patrols were to take it in turn to provide the navigation for the hike. This included the compass bearing and also the measurement of the distance.
Looks like estimation will have to be on the scouts agenda for a program as it seems that they had forgotten from last year how far their walking pace took them.
Kyle I do not really think that your normal walking pace was 1 m. It was more like 0.5 m. Once we sorted this out then they were able to get a little closer to the points.
To those Scouts that took part in the hike there will be a quiz coming your way. The Scout to get the most answers correct will earn themselves a reward for doing so.
Unfortunately not one of the was able to find a koala before we reached the Koala Centre. There was a prize up for offer. About the only animals that the scouts saw were a gonna, crows, and a wallaby.
At about 9:30 am the scouts decided to have a pre morning tea stop. They had less than 1 km to go before the stop for morning tea and it was mostly down hill from this point.
The morning tea stop was at the gate between the National Park and reserve pictured in the sign. At this point it had taken the scouts 1.5 hours to negociate about 3.5 to 4 km. There was still about 5 km to go with a lunch break and a couple of activities to complete in between.
Arriving at the lunch stop gave the scouts and opertunity to complete some badge work.
They were split into two groups an asked to build a chair. The only stipulation they were given was that the need to use a minimum of 4 staves.
One group made a great chair that then had a flagpole attached to it for a parade at the side of an old quarry.
We did make it to our final destination even after the efforts of the four patrols in trying to get us all lost!! We have a little work to do on estimation.
After completing the hike the scouts took to the koala centre.
We left just in time for a storm to arrive.

Camp Cooking and Hygiene
Wow what a night. It seemed that the program that Nathan put together went out the window. At least the scouts got to cook. That was about the only part of the program that was achieved. A Big thanks to Rikki for coming along as Hathi was not feeling the best.
The scouts learnt a couple of new, old games tonight from a former scout leader. Thanks to Kingfisher. We may see more of him.
Nathan arrived early and with the help of Brent prepared the cooking fire for the night. While the scouts were playing games coals were being produced on the fire.
Well it seems that the scouts can cook lemonade scones quite successfully. I do not believe that there were any failures. I sampled a couple of scones with no ill side effects.
Mums you need to let these scouts loose in the kitchen. They need more cooking practice before our next camp. Some of the scouts need practice with cleaning up as well.
The Recipe was as simple as adding SR Flour Cream and Lemonade.
They were provided with enough cream to make whipped cream to put on their scones with strawberry jam once they were cooked.
One patrol even went to the trouble of making their own butter as well. Well done Rebecca of Koala Patrol.
Badgework
Following on from last Friday night where all those scouts attended the Rural Fire Brigade and then the hike on Sunday where there was quite an amount of badgework completed.
There was more badgework completed tonight with a number of badges being completed.

Beenleigh Scouts sent two patrols each with 5 scouts to Butterfly 2012 at Murrenbong Campsite over the Weekend of 17 and 18 March. There were about 77 patrols taking part in the activity. The Weekend involved the scouts navigating themselves between 8 activity bases. the weekends theme was endangered animals. Each bases activity was bases around endangered animals. Hathi was assigned to Dingo base.
The activity at Dingo base was to feed a very savage endangered animal located within a pen. the patrol was split into two with a group at either end. The object was to deliver food and water to the animal. Four roped were used to control the delivery of the food and water. 25 points were awarded for each piece of food delivered which there were three and then 5 points for each cup of water with a max of 25 points. Also they would loose 20 points if any one of their patrol crossed a line at either end. Also they had to complete it within 20 minutes but after 15 minutes they lost 5 points for each minute over.
At 5:00 pm which ever base the patrol was at then that was where they were to set up camp, and cook dinner. Activities were planned to be run for the scouts at the base after dinner and before lights out. Well along came the rain, and rain. The next morning the scouts had breakfast completed the activity if they had not already done so and then continued. After completing an activity the scouts were given a code and a key to determine their next activity co-ordinates. If they got it wrong then there was a chance that they would miss a base. If they missed a base then there was no way of getting them back to that activity as each base could only give the code to get them to the next base. There were a number of patrols that came through that had misses a base or two.
At the end of the second day all their points were added up. Beenleigh Koala Patrol lead by Kyle came in the top 10. Well done to Koala Patrol. Well done to Scorpion patrol lead by Sophie. Not sure what place they got but they finished.
